How to use cross-stitch in scrapbooking? Well, there are quite a lot of ways in which some added stitching can embellish your scrapbook pages. In this blog post, I’m going to show you some gorgeous examples of very intricate cross-stitch needlework, but also very easy and quick ways in which you can add some yarn-art to your memory keeping!

Personally, I love combining different mediums, in this case: paper and yarn. I’ve already written about using crochet items as scrapbook embellishments (check out the blog post about Crochet Hearts HERE, and the one about Crochet Flowers HERE) and now I’m adding cross-stitch to the blog post list!

Scroll down with me to get inspired. Then whip out some of that embroidery floss and get cracking with your own cross-stitch creations! Enjoy!

This gorgeous and colorful page has a big cross-stitched title and a small floral cross-stitch embellishment. The color scheme is pastel and bright and the chosen yarn colors for both the title and the flower fit this palette perfectly. The cross-stitched page elements really bring a cosy feeling to the page. The big letters are fairly straightforward to stitch, as is the little flowers and its petals. Just choose the perfect colors for your page’s color scheme and get stitching! If you need more of a guide, or an example of what the letters are going to look like, you can always search online and print some examples. Notice how the three clusters around the center circle form a design triangle. And also notice the little row of soft pink cross-stitches in the upper left corner of the page. It is the perfect finishing touch!

The stitching that was used to embellish this layout is for more subtle. The cross-stitching fills up the heart behind the title in a very unobtrusive way. This is mainly due to the choice of yarn color. I love how the cross-stitching on the heart adds texture to the page and also gives it a softness that tones down the somewhat harsh angular setup of the rest of the layout. Again, the pattern for the cross-stitching is not very difficult, but it might require some investment of time. The great thing about adding cross-stitching to an embellishment rather than to the page directly is that you can make some of these beforehand. When you then actually get to sit down to scrap you can just grab your favorite cross-stitched piece and not lose any valuable scrapping time!

I wanted to include this work of cross-stitch art just to show what is possible when it comes to memory keeping and stitching. The whole background is cross-stitched! Now, this is not a traditional scrapbook layout. In fact, it is a shadowbox to remember Bojangles the cat. What a great idea! Surely not for the beginner or the faint of heart, but putting this much effort into your memory keeping can elevate an average result into a true work of art! Another reason why I wanted to include this piece is that I have never seen the combination of cross-stitching and photos before. It is a remarkable piece of work by any standard! Not necessarily meant to be copied, but certainly meant to inspire!

We’re definitely moving into cross-stitching professional with this gorgeous layout. The stitched roses are stunning, but what a lot of work! Not everybody will have the time (and, let’s face it, the patience…) to create such an elaborate cross-stitched background. You could always “cheat” a little bit and go digital: print out a stunning work of cross-stitched art like this one on a piece of cardstock and use that as your background. Or, alternatively, you can draw the cross-stitches rather than actually stitching them. It would still be a lot of work, but go a lot faster all the same. But if you have the skill, the will, the time and the patience, by all means stitch away and immortalize those precious memories!

I love the monochrome look of this page. It gives off a very distinguished and muted feeling. I love the simplicity and texture of the few well-chosen page elements.

The cross-stitched element on this page looks very elaborate, but can be achieved fairly quickly. This is because only one color of yarn is used, so no need to switch between different colors all the time. You will need to prepare the pattern thoroughly: where will the stitches need to be, and so, where do you have to pre-puncture the background paper. You can find those patterns online, or, if you’re looking for something very specific and not able to find it anywhere, make up your own. Once everything is in place, you can work up the cross-stitching itself much faster.

Don’t worry, the patterns and intricacies of the cross-stitching will only get easier after this one. How gorgeous is this layout? From what I understand, there is a very talented lady who creates these backgrounds on commission. The creator of this scrapbook page had her make one in her favorite colors, so it’s no wonder that the other page elements fit the color scheme perfectly!

Apart from requesting this cross-stitching lady to make one for you (or, indeed, spending most of your weekends making it yourself…), you could go the digital route again and printing out the background rather than stitching it. Or, if you like the handmade look, create those cross-stitches with marker instead of yarn (i.e. drawing them!).

This layout shows that repetition of a simpler design can be very effective too. I love the sea of white space on this layout! The cross-stitched reindeer, together with the wood-style background add a lot of texture to the page. The layout has a distinctive minimalist Scandinavian feeling to it. I love how the cross-stitched elements fit the photo and title perfectly. It is such a great idea for sprucing up a minimalist layout.

You can find free cross-stitch patterns like this one online. Or you can try to create your own by sketching it out with little crosses first. These little Christmas-themed cross-stitch elements can also be used on handmade Christmas cards, placesettings for your Christmas dinner table or even as a little Christmas tree decoration. The possibilities of these little gems are endless, but remember to put them also on your Christmas scrapbook layouts!

This layout shows that cross-stitch can even have its place on a more urban and grungy looking page. I love the bit colorful title words. These have been stitched to the page as well! The color of the cross-stitch hearts fits with their respective titles. This is a great way to achieve unity across very different types of media. The photos are kept in black and white and each of the three has a little something extra added to them: awesome paperclips and even a wood veneer photo frame (you could totally use those drilled holes for cross-stitching too!). The little white cross-stitched heart on the red background is the perfect finishing touch. This grungy layout is the perfect mix of different media and elements. So, there is no excuse not to use any cross-stitching on your own pages!

Of course, there absolutely should be cross-stitching on a page that documents, well, cross-stitching! In this hobby-inspired layout the big letter “C” of the title is elaborately cross-stitched using different colors of yarn. Making such a big cross-stitched capital letter is a great idea for monogram pages, birthday cards, (bridal) invitation etc. And, obviously, as an awesome page element for your scrapbook layouts!

I love how the page is kept very minimal. This way all the work that went into creating that big cross-stitched letter really gets to shine. Notice that you really don’t have to go overboard when choosing the difficulty or intricacy of the cross-stitch pattern you want to use to achieve an impressive result. Sometimes, or rather: often, simple is the best way to go. This way, the cross-stitched element doesn’t have to take too much time to make and the impact and effect is still gorgeous!

This cute layout shows that even a couple of well-placed stitches are enough to add some cross-stitch flair to your page. In this case, little squares have been cross-stitched in soft pink embroidery floss. Also, some embroidery floss was added behind the title and date card. I love the combination of a minimalistic look with a little touch of grunge (achieved with the random black paint splatters). One of the stitches in the squares is a knot with some extra embroidery floss sticking out. This little “imperfection” adds to the loose and grungy feeling of the page. I love the color scheme with the pale browns and pinks. Now you know that even a few cross-stitches can add a lot to your page. Why not try to see where you can add some stitches yourself?

The cross-stitched element on this layout is quite dominant. It is build up out of different kinds of cross-stitched borders, each of which is fairly simple to stitch. I love the color combination of the different borders and how those colors match with both the photos and the title letters. The cross-stitched border piece is made separately from the rest of the page. If making a piece like this is a bit too overwhelming, or if you simply don’t have the time, consider picking your favorite border strip and making just that one. There are enough patterns to choose from! You can frame your photo with them on your scrapbook page, or frame the whole background of your layout. The possibilities are endless!

This layout shows how to use cross-stitch on your page in a completely different way. The floral pattern is printed or drawn on and only a couple of the green leaf stitches are actually cross-stitched with embroidery floss. This way, you can get some quick results! What a great idea! The green of the embroidery floss provides an extra color pop as it is much greener than the printed example. I absolutely love this idea. It is good to see how “only” printed cross-stitches look on a page. It is a look I really like. You could consider using brigher colors, but there is something to be said for this paler, less obtrusive or dominant color scheme. The cross-stitch pattern is further “dressed up” with colorful little hearts, buttons and paint splatters. These not only fill up some of the gaps in the pattern, but also give a more whimsical look to this scrapbook layout.

This is another layout that uses cross-stitch more sparingly. Half of the heart is cross-stitched in a lovely pink color that matches the rest of the flower-filled heart beautifully. Notice that the stitches are not all the same size. This way a more fluid line is achieved. It actually looks like the left part of the heart is “drawn on” with stitched embroidery floss. It is a beautiful effect. It just goes to show that you really don’t need to stitch up a whole elaborate embroidered page element to get awesome results. Just a little bit on the right spot and executed in the right way will get you far!

Now, let’s talk a bit about that awesome flower cluster. What a bright and happy bunch! This is truly a lesson in how clustering should be done. There is unity in the cluster, despite the great mix of colors, because most of the paper flowers are the same style. Bigger flowers (of mostly the same size) are mixed with smaller flowers. On top of this cluster, a few distinctive accents have been added: some different types of paper flowers, the little heart and, of course, the cute butterflies. Adding paint spatters around the page (notice they form a design triangle!) as whimsy and playfulness. They are the perfect finishing touches to a very happy and bright layout.

Adding cross-stitching to your scrapbook page doesn’t get any easier than this. Three very subtle rows of eight cross-stitches each have been added to the vertical background column. They add just a hint of extra coziness, picking up the colors from the color scheme and give some body to the word art and date respectively. This is a great idea for cross-stitching beginners who want to try out how stitching on paper works and who want to see results quickly.

The layout itself is a lovely spring time adventure page. I love those gorgeous floral cut-outs that peek out left and right from under the photo mat. Their colors are matched in the colorful title ánd in those subtle cross-stitch additions.

Love, love, lóve those little cross-stitch letters on this page! What a cute and easy way to add both coziness and show off your cross-stitching skills at once! Notice how the cross-stitched element is the same size as the word quote on the right side of the photo. This brings balance to the photo area. The colors of the embroidery floss pick up several colors that are used on the page. I love how every added embellishment still make the photo the star of the show. Wouldn’t we all like to have such a great snapshot of us with our dads?

The cross-stitching on this page adds to the serene and classical look of the layout. The lovely floral pattern has been cross-stitched not only once, but twice, like a mirror image. I love the subtle color scheme used for the cross-stitching. It lends such an elegant feeling to the page. The photos are kept in black and white and are stacked on top of very similar looking paper mats, embellished with some small enamel dots. The whole page breathes elegance and minimalism. I love it! The wood veneer title (not sure what it says exactly, so much fun to see those traditional scrapbooking elements in a language other than English!) is the perfect finishing touch to a stunning page.

Now, let’s take a look at how you can use cross-stitching in a Christmas layout! On this page, the Christmas tree has been cross-stitched in a very subtle way. Not the whole tree shape has been filled with green cross-stitches, but only some, just enough to see the shape and add to the minimalist atmosphere of the page. I love the addition of the little bird and the heart tree topper. They give the tree more “credibility” somehow. This page has so much white space making that cross-stitched Christmas tree really pop! Did you also notice all those gorgeous vintage Christmas images in the banner on top of the page? Such a simple and cute idea to give a rather “un-Christmassy” looking Christmas layout a little bit more Yuletide atmosphere. Also notice how the little wood veneer birds form a design triangle, pulling this page together nicely.

What a sweet layout! It celebrates that staple of all bath times everywhere: the yellow rubber (or plastic) duck! There are duckies everywhere on this page: on the photo (obviously), stamped on the vertically running white paper border, a big cut-out ducky that draws most of the attention, ánd a whole cross-stitched row of eight little duckies ready for your bath!

This is a different type of cross-stitch than what we have seen so far: the stitches are really small, and are therefore able to build up really detailed small images, just like these little ducks. I love this kind of cross-stitching, because it is almost like “drawing” with embroidery floss. There are só many possibilities for using this technique on your scrapbook pages (and cards, invitations, t-shirts etc). And there are endless patterns available for this kind of little critters online!

On this page, the floral cross-stitched element has been cut out and pasted on top of all the other page elements. This in itself is an unusual way of using scrapbook embellishments, since it also partially covers the three added photos (notice that design triangle?). Adding those florals in this way works perfectly and the photos seem to become part of the floral arrangement. What a great idea! I love the combination of the cross-stitched flowers and leaves with the other kinds of twigs and flowers into a grand bouquet. Using a white background for the cross-stitched flowers really make those flowers, and especially that big flower in the middle, pop off the salmon pink colored background. Something to keep in mind when starting your cross-stitching projects!

In this layout, a little cross-stitched heart has been added to a kraft paper tag. What a great idea and what a great addition to the page! You can make those separate cross-stitched tags quite easily and use them for a lot of projects, including, of course, to document your most precious of memories.

This page celebrates that small, but very significant, moment in building the mother-child bond. And what a cute idea to add that pink cross-stitched heart to it!

And another layout celebrating Christmas using lovely cross-stitched patterns. This time, almost half the background is cross-stitched with a snowflake-like pattern in gorgeous pale pink and green colors. This color scheme fits the photo and the rest of the page perfectly. What a beautiful addition to your holiday pages!

Notice how the green cross-stitched elements contain two different shades of green, adding depth to the pattern. And I love that combination of the upper cross-stitched half of the layout with the background paper of the lower half. They fit together beautifully!

How To Use Crochet Hearts In Scrapbooking

I have a confession… I love to crochet! And combining memory keeping with crochet brings me unspeakable joy. So please indulge me as I dedicate yet another blog post to crochet embellishments. Yet another one? Yes indeed! I’ve already written about the ultimate yarn-related scrapbook embellishment: The crochet flower! Check out THIS BLOG POST to read áll about it!

In this layout, the photos are all angled, coordinating with the striped patterned paper background. The border between the photos and the title (love those big letters!) is made up of lots of patterned paper tags that are stitched to the page and a whole row of gorgeous colorful crochet hearts! You really can’t go wrong with these beauties! Despite the many different colors of the crochet embellishments, there is uniformity because the hearts all have the same shape and size. This uniformity is enhanced by matching the colors of the paper tags to the colors of the underlying crochet hearts.

Another very colorful layout, and even though the crochet hearts are not in a straight row, they are clearly grouped together in a semi-straight angled line. The hearts are clustered with some buttons, adding extra playfulness to the layout. The background is very colorful as well, with both the title ánd the background paper consisting of many different colors. The photo of the beautiful girl still is the star of the show!

This layout shows a more modest use of crochet hearts. One hot pink heart is strategically placed on the photo, immediately drawing the eye there. The crochet heart forms a design triangle with two hot pink flower-shaped buttons that are both placed near the photo, helping to put the focus there. The rest of the page is decorated with many colorful banners and titles, the colors of which are bright, but more pastel than the hot pink of the crochet heart and buttons. This helps to reduce any overwhelm such a busy page could produce.

If you have a whole stack of colorful crochet hearts and you just want to use all of them on one layout: pay attention to this page! The crochet hearts are arranged in a triangle that points to the big title letters (love that polka dot pink!). The photos are black and white, which allows the rest of the page to pop with color. I love the little word circles that are added to some of the crochet hearts. And notice that one orange heart on the bottom of the page!

This layout is rather more subdued in it’s color scheme. The photos are matted on some lovely pastel banners. The added crochet hearts match the banner colors, as do the letters of the title “Love”. Another crochet heart is added to the journaling card, pulling the whole layout together beautifully. I love that this page is colorful but also still quite tranquil. This is possible by grouping all the colored page elements together and leaving a lot of white space.

This layout is filled with hearts! And with little polaroid-sized photos. I love the mix of black and white and color photos and how they are arranged on top of a circle background. Layered paper hearts of all different sizes are mixed in with the crochet hearts in a very playful way.

This layout has a very clear blue, orange and white color scheme and the little crochet hearts fit in perfectly. Notice how the three clusters of hearts contain one heart of each color and how they form a design triangle, both within the three hearts as well as within the three clusters. I love the blue lined background paper and the fresh orange polka dot photo mat. The feathers that are tucked behind the quote card add to the tangibility and cuddliness of the page.

This is a layout filled with color and happiness. And, of course, this would include crochet hearts! On this page, the hearts are used as more random page elements, together with colorful die cut flowers and chevron arrows. I love the vertical patterned paper strips on both sides of the layout. They add so much fun to the page, as well as the colorful stamped “Happiness” title.

Another very colorful layout, but this time the effect is a little more subdued because the photos are printed in black and white. What a great idea to do a “then & now” page, those are always such fun! There is only one crochet heart on this page, but it has pride of place in the title and serves as a colorful replacement for the letter “O”. Another great idea!

I always love a great grid layout and if some of the grids are actually filled with crochet hearts I’m in heaven! This gorgeous grid is very colorful, but not overwhelming, because the colors repeat themselves and a strict color scheme is adhered to. There is so much to see on this page: cute photos, sweet embellishments, and, of course, those awesome crochet hearts! I love how the grid is formed by a black dotted line. You could do this with some of your favorite thin washi tapes!

Love that hot pink crochet heart! It really stands out amongst all the other page elements, because of it’s placement, but mostly because of its color. This is a very happy layout filled with sweet photos and cute page elements. The pink crochet heart helps to ground the layout and to pull the left and right side (where the vertical divide is) together. The yellow stripes behind the crochet heart make it look like it is radiating sunshine!

This page has a clear color scheme: I love the combination of sand color, green, yellow, orange and blue. The three orange crochet hearts really pop off the page. They hold some very cute colored feathers in place. I love how the photos are arranged on the right side of the page. The photo cluster almost serves as white space against a very colorful background (washi tape anyone?) because of the dominant sand color.

Another grid-type layout with crochet hearts! I’m so happy. This grid reminds me of the Project Life layouts, only on this page, the different grids are stitched together, what a great effect! I love how the little crochet hearts have been assigned two by two to their own little grids. The color scheme in combination with the black and white photo is excellent! And what mother wouldn’t love to see their daugthers love declared on a page like this?

Bright hot pink! This layout is truly poppin’! What a fun and colorful page! I love the star-studded background paper layered with the dark little hearts. And, of course, the three hot pink crochet hearts forming their design triangle amidst all the other bright colors! Love, love, love!

What an incredibly cute photo! No wonder the title is “What a cutie!”, and deservedly so! The whole page breathes fun and cuteness. I think the cute little cloud-filled patterned paper background might have something to do with that too! The vertical line made by the crochet hearts pulls all the different page elements together. The crochet hearts fit the chosen color scheme perfectly. Such a cute layout!

There is no direct link between Christmas and crochet hearts, but this layout has managed to combine the two! The color scheme of the page consists of very bright colors and the red, yellow and blue crochet heart fit that palette perfectly. The photo itself even looks quite dark compared with the layout around it. All in all, it makes for a very happy Christmas page!

This layout celebrates another popular holiday: Halloween! Those crochet hearts really look good on ány kind of page, don’t they? This time, traditional green and orange Halloween colors were chosen for the crochet hearts and, as such, they provide a cute color pop to the layout. The green color is echoed in the green-lettered name above the main photo and the orange color is repeated in the zig-zagged stripe of patterned paper on the bottom of the page. This pulls all the page elements beautifully together.

This layout documents a fun and sunny summer swim night! And again, the brightly colored crochet hearts provide a fun addition to the page. Most of the page elements are clustered together in a horizontal bar, leaving lots of wonderful white space on the rest of the page. The little green and blue paint splatters anchor this bar to the rest of the page. Such a fun and bright layout!

This layout features a bigger number of brightly colored crochet hearts. I love the combination of the hot pink and red hearts so closely together. Those crochet pieces are almost like flowers in that they never seem to color clash together. The colors of the crochet hearts are repeated in the zig-zag stripes of patterned paper in the background and in the assorted star, square and flower buttons that were added to the cluster of hearts. The exposed threads with which those buttons were fastened add some extra playfulness to the layout. Notice that the added main photo is slightly overexposed, making its color scheme fit the rest of the layout perfectly.

I love scrapbook layouts about books. And apparently, the little girl that is deeply engrossed in her own book does too. Reason enough, therefore, to add lots and lots of hearts to this page to emphasize that love! The crochet hearts are lined up in a horizontal way. It almost looks like the chair that the girl sits on is leaning against this “wall of hearts”. I love the glitter letters that were used for the big title. Let’s all document our love of books with lots of crochet hearts!

This layout has a completely different vibe. The color scheme mainly consists of pastel pinks and beige/browns. These colors are emphasized by the three clusters (hello design triangle!) of crochet hearts. The crochet pieces are groups with softly tinted paper hearts that have been stitched to the page. Both the crochet and the stitching give such a cosy feeling to this layout. The pink photo mat with the teeny tiny little hearts provides a welcome color pop. This is a very sophisticated layout!

Another horizontal row of crochet hearts! This time, the hearts are arranged in the rainbow colors. This theme is continued on the page by the addition of little rainbows to the very cute cloud patterned paper. The photo is very cute and fits the color scheme and the theme of the page perfectly. I love the hodgepodge of lettering with the title and the hand lettering of the journaling. They add a very personal touch to this layout.

Such a cute photo! I love the strong color scheme for this layout with the yellow, blue and orange. All the page elements adhere to this color palette, including the little crochet hearts. Special circles have been cut out for them in the brightly colored background patterned paper to make them pop a little bit more. What a great idea! Notice several design triangles on this page: the three hearts form a triangle, as do the stars. And if you look closely, you’ll see that the green striped washi paper clusters (love that staple!) form a design triangle as well. No wonder this page looks so great!

Another layout with a strong color scheme. This time the colors green, pink and teal blue (and black!) are dominant. And for each of these colors, a cute little crochet heart is added. The differently colors chevron patterned papers all fit together beautifully, giving an immediate harmony to the page. I love all the added arrows coordinating with the color scheme, including those black dominant arrows pointing at the two most important page elements: the photo and the title!

On this layout the hot pink (just lóve that color) crochet hearts provide the color pop, together with some title cut-outs. The photo is just adorable: those girls look very cute and very tough at the same time. And this “double look” theme is continued on the rest of the page. The busy light blue patterned paper represents the “tough” side and the sweet sentiments, together with the crochet hearts and that added feather (that I absolutely adore…) represent the “cute” side. It is quite difficult to pull this dual look off, but the creator of this scrapbook layout managed it perfectly!

All the little crochet hearts in this layout seem to have “sunk” to the bottom of the big heart! And the cute photo rests on top of all those colorful hearts! And even more hearts are added with the teal blue patterned paper background that is just filled with hearts! All in all, there can be no doubt that this little girl is very much loved. I love how the crochet hearts overlap the big pink paper cut-out heart and how they are tucked in under the teal blue paper at the bottom. This gives the page an extra cozy feeling.

The crochet hearts on this page have been “dreamily” distributed in a cloud-like vertical column. Again, they provide the bright color pop against a mostly pastel colored background. I love the use of white crochet hearts in this layout, there is something very serene about that color. All the page elements are put on a slight angle, adding to the “dreamy” feeling of the page. I love both the colorful striped banner and the banner with the tiny flowers behind the photo. And of course, that clouds-and-hearts background paper is very dreamy too!

Another very cozy layout! The coziness is provided by the feather and the crochet hearts. Both these elements are so tactile and soft! I love that big paper flower with the button heart too! Notice how this flower forms a design triangle with the hot pink crochet heart and the cluster of date and word art in the upper right corner. Also notice how the dark feather and the choice for dark colored title letters echo the dark colors of the photo. This pulls all the page elements together beautifully.

Another very colorful layout about a girl that is very much loved! The crochet hearts beautifully color coordinate with the chosen star patterned paper strips. The photos are kept in black and white and are arranged as a horizontal photo strip. I love the addition of the black patterned paper with the little colorful hearts. It gives the layout some gravitas. And the repetition of the word “love”, arranged in a neat vertical stack, it very adorable!

If you are the proud owner of a rainbow selection of washi tapes, pay attention: this layout is for you! I just love everything about this page: the bright multitude of colors, the vertical strips of color-coordinated washi tapes, the addition of the cozy crochet hearts in their right color-coordinated places and the feather-type “star-bursts” that back up those crochet hearts! What a fun and whimsical feel they lend to an already very happy layout! Notice the little color-coordinated enamel dots that reside on their special uneven scalloped border. I love the uncoordinated title letters, adding even móre whimsy to the layout! Of course, the star of this very brightly colored show is still the little girl reading her book in the yard. Love it!

Want Even More Crochet?

As I mentioned in the introduction: I lóve crochet! And so I have also written a blog post about using crochet flowers on your scrapbook pages. So, if you’re not already sick of all that crochet, head over THERE to get inspired even more!

How To Use Crochet Flowers In Scrapbooking

How to use crochet flowers in scrapbooking. This blog post is filled with inspiring scrapbook layout that will show us how we can use those lovely crochet flowers as embellishments on our pages. Adding these yarn beauties is a great way of adding texture, color and dimension to your memory keeping.

You can make those little crochet flowers yourself or purchase them ready-made. Or perhaps have a crafty friend or family member make them for you!

Let’s take a look at some of the possibilities for embellishing our scrapbook layouts with crochet flowers. Whether they are dominantly present on the page or play a more modest role, these crochet flowers are a great way to add some extra dimension, playfulness and loveliness to your scrapbook pages.

Add Some Leaves For Extra Color

Adding the crochet flower by itself is often colorful enough, but sometimes you just want to add some plant leaves to create a nice bouquet or embellishment cluster. The added plant leaves can be crocheted themselves, or made from another material, adding to the diversity of the page. Some of our fellow scrapbookers have added both crochet flowers and plant leaves (of any variety) in many different ways. Let’s take a look at a couple of examples!

This layout is a great example of the added value of the extra plant leaves. The three little red crochet flowers are very cute and look great on the page, but the extra greenery gives a bit more “gravitas” to the assembled cluster. The whole flower-plant leaf cluster now forms a design triangle with the two photos. What a great way of adding those lovely crochet flowers to a scrapbook layout!

This layout takes a completely different route when it comes to adding leaves. The page is filled with beautiful pink paper flowers and accompanying green paper leaves. Notice that there are two kinds of leaves added: those with cut-out veins and those that are solid! The green leaves provide a welcome alternative color pop in a sea of overwhelming pink. The page is so completely filled with these colorful beauties you almost have to search to find the little pink crochet flower! What a lovely tangible and soft addition that little flower is to the layout.

Three different colors make up the little crochet flower cluster in the left bottom corner of the page. The three colors of the flowers are pulled together by adding that one single green colored plant leaf. I love the matching rhinestone flower hearts. They give this party layout an extra festive vibe. The page is filled with lovely tangible embellishments: notice the little felt cupcake that is added on top of the satin ribbon! I love how the page is divided into two halves with the upper half in black and white and a significant color explosion in the lower half, including the very colorful crochet flower cluster!

The title with its golden shiny swirls is the most striking feature of this layout. The color palette of the page is black, white and gold with just a little bit of pink to provide an extra color pop. And that is exactly what the little pink crochet flower provides! It forms a very small design triangle with the two added green crochet leaves and is the perfect finishing touch to a layout with lots of interesting embellishments as well as lots of white space. The pink is echoed in the little heart with the arrow and in some of the colorful paint splatters.

Button Those Flowers Up!

We saw some colorful rhinestones being used as the hearts of the flowers. That is a wonderful idea! You can also use buttons for the flower hearts. This gives a lovely hand-made artisan vibe to your page. The combination of crochet flowers with buttons is so cute! And there are endless possibilities for variety: different colors, sizes, adding colored thread or yarn through the button’s eyes, etc. Let’s take a look at some awesome examples!

This cute little baby is clearly “chillin'”. The color scheme of the page is pink and white, so I’m sort of assuming that this little infant is a little girl. The added pink embellishments are very cute: don’t you just love that little owl? And I love the added pink circles, they really add a lot of interest to the page. The lacy crochet flower is a lovely addition to the layout. It mirrors the baby’s white outfit and it is very cuddly and tangible. Its pink button heart helps to make it a true eye-catching part of the page.

The flowers on this page are both crocheted and made from felt. All of them have cute little button hearts. The felt flowers have fuchsia colored flower button hearts and the crochet flowers (notice the two layers!) have white round button hearts. The buttons aid in attaching the flowers to the page. The pink colors of the flowers are continued in the pink flowery background paper. This ties in those different page elements quite nicely.

In this layout, the double layered crochet flowers are also sewn to the page using bright white round buttons. The flowers are made in the colors of the color scheme and are arranged in a random column on the right side of the photo. This column is balanced by the big title letters and birthday cake embellishments. I love the bright happy colors of this page. They are perfect for a two-year-old’s birthday party! Notice the colorful little dots added in with the crochet flowers!

The same crochet flower combinations (double layers with the bright white round buttons) have been used in this Sweet layout. This time, the flowers are arranged in a semi-circle with both open ends pointing at the star of the show: the photo of the cute little girl! This page is so fun and colorful! The little crochet flowers help to add some dimension and textural interest to the layout.

Cluster Them Like A Garland

As we saw in the previous layout, you can get very cute results when you don’t just cluster the crochet flowers together, but arrange them in a line or circle. In this little section we’re going to dive a little deeper into the possibilities of arranging the crochet flowers in a garland on your scrapbook pages. Add them to some cute pennants and you’ll love the results!

In this layout, pale pastel colored flowers are added to a pennant garland, drawing the eye to the photo of the cute sleeping dog. The flowers fit the chosen color scheme perfectly and have a pearl bead or a crochet heart as the flower center. The cute swirl doodles and the delicate butterflies emphasize the soft vibe of this layout, making the black and white photo really stand out.

This layout has a completely different vibe. The hot pink of the background and the bright yellow letters of the title really pop. Most of the embellishments are clustered on a festive garland. These include some buttons, some colorful tags and, of course, the crochet flowers. The flowers are multi-colored and some of them are even multilayered. What a fun layout!

Cluster Them With Other Types Of Flowers

Crochet flowers can be easily clustered with other types of flowers to create a colorful, “touchable” and very diverse flower cluster. Depending on the type of flowers (and their colors) you cluster together, the vibe of the layout can really change dramatically. Let’s take a look at some examples of crochet flowers being clustered with paper flowers, doodled flowers, felt flowers etc.

In this layout the clustered flowers really emphasize the “Sunny Disposition” sentiment of the page. The crochet flowers are of the doily type variety, leaving the 3D effect to the other colorful flower types. I love the combination of the different flowers, the felt title letters and the embroidered frame around the main photo. The strip of colorful striped patterned paper running horizontally across the layout really pulls all those colors and materials together in one great unified page. Wonderful!

This vintage type layout has a completely different vibe to it. The color scheme is muted greens and browns. The crochet flowers are clustered together with a stamped doily (giving a lovely subtle dimensional effect!) and some swirly leaves. One of the crochet flowers is quite elaborate with different color layers and layer styles, making it the natural center of the cluster and helping to draw the eye to the cute baby photo.

This layout also has a quite vintage-like style, but with the chosen color scheme involving pink it is more colorful than the previous page. The pink crochet flowers are clustered together with some gorgeous felt roses and other types of flowers. I particularly love the sprig of green popping up in the right upper corner of the page, with the pearl-like berries (or flowers?). I assume this is a digital page given that “real” felt flowers would probably be too bulky to include in a traditional paper scrapbook layout. It is a great idea for a shadow box though!

The crochet flowers on this layout are clustered with all different kinds of flowers, leaves and objects, including even a clock! I love the vintage-like, “steam-punky” shabby chic vibe to this page with all the seemingly random birdcages, laces and multicolored butterflies. The scrabble tile title is a great find and putting those letters on a pennant garland is so much fun! The photo itself seems to provide a restful area in this busy layout. The page is able to stay on the right side of being too cluttered.

In stark contrast to the previous page, this layout is the epitome of bright colors and serenity. What a beautiful photo of the proud mama holding the precious little twin babies. The bright yellow crochet flower (love that little yellow button in the center!) is grouped in a wreath frame around the photo together with floral die cuts. The crochet piece adds a lot of warmth and “cuddliness” to the cluster, as does the little doily peeking out above the photo. And I absolutely love the bright yellow patterned paper background. It is such a happifying color!

The flower cluster on this layout provides some of the color pop, together with the girl and snowman drawing. The two-toned pink crochet flower in particular draws the eye. The white crochet flowers are almost like snowflakes and therefore fit the theme of the page perfectly. And you can’t but love the title “Snow Cute”. Love a pun!

The main photo on this layout doesn’t really need a lot of embellishing: it such a great and cute shot! Nevertheless, the creator of this page has added even móre cuteness to the layout by adding clusters of doilies, flowers and butterflies. In stark contrast, the matting for the photo is a camo print! What an unusual choice for a girl page! Love it!

Finishing Touches To A Colorful Layout

Sometimes you can use the crochet flowers as the color pop of the page and at other times they provide the finishing touch to an already very colorful page. Either way, crochet flowers are able to add that extra “wow”-factor to your scrapbooking layouts. Ready to see some examples? Let’s go!

This is a colorful layout, there’s no doubt about that! Even though the page already has a lot of great features (the layering of different types of patterned paper, the little elephant cluster and the scalloped polka dot edge) leaving the photo on its own on that cute blue flower background paper would not have been enough. And that is where the crochet flowers come to the rescue! Their colors match the page’s color scheme and they provide the finishing touch to this page quite perfectly.

Another very colorful layout! Love that bright green and yellow. And those floral die cuts are just perfect. The little cute soft pink crochet flower add a bit of extra impact to the big letters of the title. It is balanced by a little floral die cut on the letter “d”. I love the double layering of the crochet flower and the added crochet leaves with the two shades of green mimic that floral die cut perfectly.

Put Them In A Row

We’ve put the crochet flowers in clusters and in garlands, but what would happen if we simply just put them in a row? Adding either horizontal or vertical rows of crochet flowers can be just the embellishing your scrapbook layout needs. Sometimes the simple ideas are the best! Scroll down with me and take a look at some examples!

how to use crochet flowers on your scrapbook page;crochet flower scrapbook layouts; crochet flower page inspiration; using crochet flowers on layouts; yarn flower scrapbook embellishments; document memories using crochet flowers;

Three crochet flowers in a vertical row are the only embellishment this cute photo needs. The flower colors are inspired by the light blue shirt of the little child and their little yellow flower heart give the page an extra pop of color. Two different types of crochet flowers are used, the middle one being the most elaborate, in order to prevent the little crochet flower row being too boring. I love the giant oversized polka dots on the patterned paper!

This layout shows a horizontal row of crochet flowers. The flowers all have two layers that fit the color scheme of the page beautifully and all have white button flower hearts. This gives a playful effect that emphasizes the “Silly” theme of the page. The little flags and the gorgeous hot pink background patterned paper also help! Notice the little pieces of washi tape that hold the photos in place!

Use Them As A Vintage Style Embellishment

In some of the previously shown scrapbook layouts we have already come across the vintage look and seen how crochet flowers can add to that vibe. Now, let’s take a closer look at some examples of how you can use crochet flowers on actual vintage pages!

I love the color scheme of this layout with it’s deep purples and beiges. The two crochet flowers fit this color palette perfectly and add an extra dimension to this vintage page. As you can see, crochet flowers cluster very well with all sorts of materials. On this layout they are clustered with vintage lace, a string of pearls and even a mini-mannequin!

This layout has a completely different kind of vintage vibe. The creator of the page included a very cute photo of herself as a young girl and journals a little bit about herself in that time. This combination alone makes this an interesting page, but the added embellishments make this page perfect in all its simplicity. The glitter letters of the title, the green leaf photo frame layered on a grungy floral green background, combined with the two colorful and elaborate crochet flowers make this scrapbook layout absolutely gorgeous!

Use Them As The Color Pop In Your Design

We’ve seen some examples of this already, but let’s focus once more on the power of the crochet flower to provide a cute and cuddly pop of color to a scrapbook page!

This cute kid is going places and prefers to stay safe doing it! I love the orange-heavy color scheme of the page combined with some dark red and an absolutely beautiful shade of blue. The simple flower, with its open leaves and center, crocheted with the brightest orange yarn ever produced is that extra pop of color that this page needs. Just perfect!

Use Them As Design Triangle Elements

You’ve probably heard of the famous “design triangle” where it is considered pleasing to the eye to have three distinct elements or clusters arranged in a sort of triangle shape. Once you are aware of them, you will see them everywhere! You can, of course, use crochet flowers (or clusters of crochet flowers) for this very purpose. Let’s take a look at some examples!

In this layout, the crochet flowers on the upper corners of the photo and the two little yellow buttons on the lower right corner of the photo form a design triangle. The triangle frames the photos and draws the eye to them. Using different types of embellishments (and in this case different colors or numbers) keeps the triangle interesting and diverse.

Layout designed by Marie Godliman.

The little green crochet flowers form a small design triangle around the “Here’s my heart” card. This time, all the elements of the triangle are the same shape and color. This adds to the tranquility of the page. The green color of the flowers matches the color scheme (green and red, based on the outfit of the little baby girl) perfectly. I love the red popping journaling strips.

The design triangle is yet again present around the photo. It is such an effective way of drawing the eye! The two crochet flower clusters form the triangle with the “Easter Sunday” title on the right lower corner of the photo. The crochet flowers, made in the yellow and white color scheme of the layout, add a real softness to the page.

How To Doodle On Your Scrapbook Pages

How to doodle on your scrapbook pages. Let’s take a look at how you can incorporate your own doodles in your layouts. This will make your scrapbooking even more personal!

Doodles are simple drawings and scribbles that can be abstract or actually look like something. Doodling is so much fun and everybody can do it! There is no right or wrong way to do it. You can draw very simple and basic doodles or get those creative juices flowing and make something more elaborate. Use your doodles as the background to your photos and stories or make them into cute, little, and, above all, personal embellishments!

Want to see even more doodle-type art on scrapbook layouts? Check out this blog post that is all about ZENTANGLING on your pages!

Doodle A Cute Frame

Perhaps the most logical place to start doodling is to embellish the photos on your scrapbook. A relatively easy way to do that is to doodle a frame around them. Doodling is so versatile that you can adjust your doodles to fit any theme and any color scheme. Let’s take a look at an example of a doodled photo frame!

how to use doodles on your scrapbook page;doodle scrapbook layouts; doodle page inspiration; doodling on layouts; doodle pages; document using doodles;
Source: Pinterest

The photo of these cute dogs has a doodled frame. It is a cool mishmash of geometric shapes and it is kept in the color scheme of the page. Some interest was added by overlaying the doodles with a hexagon grid. The rest of the page has some doodled flower clusters, all in the same green and blue color scheme.

Doodle About Doodling

If you love to doodle, why not make a scrapbook page about it? After all, our hobbies deserve to be documented! So get that doodling genius in gear and start drawing!

how to use doodles on your scrapbook page;doodle scrapbook layouts; doodle page inspiration; doodling on layouts; doodle pages; document using doodles;
Layout designed by Deazine.

This layout attempts to answer that century-old question: To Doodle Or Not To Doodle? For me, and hopefully for you too, the answer will always be: To Doodle! I love that the doodles on this page reflect the personal style of their creator. The handwritten journaling fits in with the doodling theme perfectly, and even has some doodling around it!

Doodle In Shapes

Doodling has a lot in common with zentangling, especially when you limit your doodles to fit a particular shape. It is a great way of creating unique page elements for your layouts that go beyond “just” doodling. They can help set the theme of the page and create some playful visual interest.

how to use doodles on your scrapbook page;doodle scrapbook layouts; doodle page inspiration; doodling on layouts; doodle pages; document using doodles;
Layout designed by Jennaroo.

I suppose technically this should be described as journaling in a shape, which in this case it the bold, big letters of the title. But this would also look awesome with some actual doodle-drawings in those letters! I love that the rest of the page has some very personal doodles, love thos little skulls!), most of which are clustered in the right bottom corner. The whole layout is pulled together by a doodled frame around the entire piece. The creative way the photo has been altered deserved a special mention!

Here is another layout with word doodles. This time the word “snow” has been doodled over and over in different sizes and fonts into flower petal shapes. Or are they snowflakes? Either way, the effect is very cute and the doodles flower-snowflakes fit the minimalistic look of the rest of the page beautifully. This layout shows that even when you feel you’re not very good at doodling shapes you can still doodle with words!

Doodle On Pattern Paper

If that white piece of cardstock is just too daunting for you why not start with a patterned paper background and doodle on that? This way you can follow along already existing lines to emphasize certain shapes of the existing pattern. Or you could follow your artistic heart and just make your own doodles, creating instant embellishments for the page. Let’s take a look at an example!

how to use doodles on your scrapbook page;doodle scrapbook layouts; doodle page inspiration; doodling on layouts; doodle pages; document using doodles;
Layout designed by NZmommy.

First of all, how cute are those photos! This kid is ready for some big adventures with those cool shades! Now let’s look at the doodling. The patterned paper that was used as the background has a very doodly vibe to it itself. The added black doodles therefore fit right in! I love that the doodled plant vine-type shapes are embellished with some cute little white flowers. The color scheme of the layout fits the bright colors of the kid’s outfit perfectly!

Doodle On People’s Faces

We’ve all done it: draw mustaches on people’s faces in magazines or newspapers. It’s just one of those things kids love to do! So why not be a little naughty and doodle something awesome on the faces of the people in your photos? Especially if it helps set the vibe or theme of the page. Or maybe just because it is sooo much fun!

how to use doodles on your scrapbook page;doodle scrapbook layouts; doodle page inspiration; doodling on layouts; doodle pages; document using doodles;
Layout designed by Deborah Wagner.

I love this layout. The photo is perfect for some added doodles! I think these particular doodles were added digitally, but the principle stands. So let yourself get inspired by those cute Snapchat filters, after all, that is a way of doodling on your selfie! Make yourself, or other people in your layout photos, into a cat or other animal. Add some awesome mustache or cool sunglasses. Apply makeup or some elaborate hairstyle. Just have some fun!

Doodle To Support The Theme

You can always doodle whatever you want on your pages, but it is a great idea to get inspiration for your doodles from the theme or subject of your page. Creating doodles that support the theme (birthday, summer, Christmas etc.) helps to pull the layout together whilst still giving it that playful look. It is a great way to embellish your page without distracting from the focal point or the theme!

how to use doodles on your scrapbook page;doodle scrapbook layouts; doodle page inspiration; doodling on layouts; doodle pages; document using doodles;
Layout designed by Saruz Scrapbook

This first layout is a great example of doodling to support the theme. In fact the little doodles help to tell the story of the photo even further. The little cloud doodles tell us about the weather conditions. The newspaper doodled banner give a festive feeling to the layout and the little letter, number and phone doodles help us understand what the little kid is actually doing! I love the way some of the doodles are swirled around the photo creating both a photo frame and a whirlwind of action.

The kids in these photos are basketball stars! And the star and swirl doodles totally support that superstar theme. The big star behind the photo cluster sets the tone, together with the title and the red doodled star rises to dizzying heights in a mighty doodled swirl. Such a fun way to decorate a scrapbook page! Notice how the big star is angled, adding even more playfulness to the layout!

Doodle Your Own Background

Only have boring monochrome scrapbook papers? Not to worry: just doodle on it to create an interesting and very unique background! It is a great way to get those creative juices flowing and add something truly personal to your scrapbook layouts.

This layout has a background that has been completely filled with doodles! You could almost argue that it is more of a zentangled page than doodled. I love the very creative way the journaling is included in the doodles. The creator of this page was clearly inspired by those song lyrics and just went for it! I love that the colors of the photos match the color of the photo frames and the color of the doodles. This way the layout is very cohesive.

This layout shows a completely different doodling style to create a lovely background. The doodles fit the title of “Bloom into you” beautifully. I love the monochrome aspect of the page, combining the black and white photo with the grey of the pencil drawings. With this kind of doodling your kids could create the background to their own pages!

The hearts on this page are created using stencils, the rest of the doodles are drawn freehand. What a great idea to combine those two techniques! This way your hearts are perfectly drawn and you still have the playfulness of the rest of the doodles. I love this chalkboard look, it kind of fits the black and white coloring of the little dog!

I love this completely over-the-top look! It’s like someone wanted to try out their new red marker in every possible way. Notice that the enthusiastic doodling is not restricted to just the background: the creator of this page happily doodled on the photo itself as well! My favorite doodles on this page are the little golden crowns and tiaras added to every person’s head. The color combination of gold and red is perfect for Christmas!

Another doodled layout that is inspired by song lyrics! This time the chorus of the song is doodled in white on the photo matte (matching the black and white photo!) and the rest of the lyrics are doodled in black on the red background. Listening to an inspiring song whilst doodling is a great way to get a free flow of creativity going!

This layout is just hilarious! The photo is funny and that is emphasized by the journaling in the blue speech bubble. The main colors of the page are red, white and blue, with black doodling on the white paper background. The page is filled with over-the-top “Vegas-style” doodling, resulting in a very unique and personal style. Making this layout must have been so much fun!

This layout shows some of the possibilities of adding color to extensive background doodling. I love the little white doodled circles that are randomly colored in. This kind of doodled structure can work very well to create all sorts of different backgrounds.

Paste Cut-Out Doodles

By doodling on different colored paper and cutting them out you can use your created doodles as unique and personal embellishments on your scrapbook layouts. Doodle your own little flowers, swirls and shapes, cut them out and place them in gorgeous clusters on your pages. This will instantly give that 3D look to your doodles embellishments.

For this layout random swirl doodles have been cut out and used as embellishments. The swirls support the snowy theme of the page, creating a sort of snow storm together with the white snowflakes. Adding the doodled swirls this way gives an extra (3D!) dimension to the layout. I love that the swirls have two colors: the light blue of the paper and black pen scribbles. This adds extra movement to the swirl doodle embellishments.

In this layout a whole doodled flower cluster was added. The doodles have been drawn on white paper with a rather thick marker, which gives an awesome effect. I love how some doodled flowers are added to other places on the page and how the use of the thick marker is continued in the title and some of the journaling.

Doodle The Skyline Or Other landmarks

Add a little personality to your pages by doodling the skyline or some other famous landmarks of your place of destination! What a great way to embellish those travel layouts! Doodle your route on a map, doodle on your photo to show which hotel room was yours or just add doodles of those familiar touristic sights!

This doodled skyline is not strictly speaking the literal skyline of New York City, but it does add a nice urban feel to the page. Especially, since that skyline doodle was combined with some pidgeons, fire hydrants and the famous New York City yellow cabs! The hexagon-shaped photos give a nice impression of what looks to be a fun city trip! The paint splatters add a little inner city grunge to the layout.

Use Doodled Pattern Paper Or Embellishments

Not sure about your doodling abilities, or just not sure about what shapes to doodle? Don’t worry: there are patterned papers and embellishments out there that have done all the doodling for you. Just add a nice collection of them to your page and hey presto: a very personal and unique looking layout with premade doodle embellishments!

These cute and colorful firework embellishments are a perfect example of premade (digital) doodles. The title doodles are also premade. You can cluster these elements in any way you want, just like regular embellishments. The result is a colorful, personal and unique page that perfectly documents those wonderful family memories!

In this layout pre-made doodles were added in the form of a doodled doily, yellow dotted circles and doodled red and black frames. The combination of all these very different doodles is a very colorful and unique page! The vibe of the layout perfectly fits the cute and sassy photo!

This layout has a completely different vibe to that of the previous layouts. It is a classic layout that uses cute scratchily doodled flowers (hello, design triangle!) and doodled hand-lettered title. I love how the doodled black flowers are combined with those yellow paper ones. Grey and yellow is such a beautiful color combination. The yellow really pops off the page!

Doodle Your Journaling

Why restrict your doodling to just some embellishments or the background? No need! It is so much fun using doodles in your journaling and titles! Let’s take a look at how some of our fellow scrapbookers have done just that!

This is the left page of a two-page spread, which is why the title seems to stop mid-sentence. There are doodles in the title that help to emphasize the meaning of the words. Also, the journaling itself is filled with doodles like little hearts substituting the letter “O” in the word “Love” and doodled lettering. Different colors are used, adding an extra playful touch to the journaling. This kind of journaling sure looks like a lot of fun!

This layout has both doodling in the corner of the page and doodling in the journaling. A quote or song lyric is used for journaling and the wavy lines on which the funky differently sized letters are written beautifully fits the theme. I love the addition of the wings. The white of the wings is mirrored in the white “colored-in” letters in the journaling. All elements together create a very ethereal layout vibe.

Use Mixed Techniques

Sure, you can doodle with pens, pencils and markers! But why stop there? Have you ever considered mixing up some techniques and for instance doodle using embroidery? Or using stamps? Or anything really? Well, I’ve found two layouts online that have combined some techniques onto one gorgeously doodled page.

We’ll forgive the typo since the layout is so cute! Don’t you just love the blue-on-blue doodling on this page? And just take a look at those embroidered doodles! So cute! What a great idea to use stitching in this way! I absolutely adore the winged letter “R” that is filled with bigger and smaller hearts. It is an absolutely precious layout!

This layout has a different doodling combination. As far as I can tell, the extensive floral doodles are either preprinted on the page or (digital) stamps. The cluster around the photo contains colorful little doodled balloons and other doodly embellishments. The result is a playful and colorful feast for the eyes.

Need More Inspiration? Consider Zentangling!

If you like doodling and scribbling on your pages, you might want to consider doing some zentangling too! Take a look at this blogpost to get some more inspiration on how to embellish your layouts using your own creativity!

How To Use Zentangles On Your Scrapbook Layouts

How to use zentangles in your scrapbook layouts? This blog post will inspire you by showing many different ways in which zentangling can be incorporated on a scrapbook page. So scroll down and take a look at all the different zentangle scrapbook layout ideas!

Zentangling is the art of creating beautiful images using repeating patterns. As the name suggests, it can be a very “zen”-like activity. There is something very relaxing about scribbling all those little lines and dots over and over. So why not give it a go and embellish your scrapbook pages with some zentangles of your own?

Go For It And Fill Up The Entire Page

No need to be shy about your zentangle talents! Just fill up the entire page with all your lovely creations! This way, your zentangles will become a very dominant page element. Let’s take a look at some examples of how this can be done.

The creator of this layout has used zentangles to fill those lovely big mushroom shapes! What a great idea! It’s like she created a whole new fantasy mushroom forest where the photo of her and her friends seem to have a lovely time together. The patterns used in the zentangling are not overly complex. I love the use of color in the zentangles. This livens up the page and is yet another very “zen”-like activity when creating a page. Just don’t be in a furry to finish it!

This zentangled layout has a completely different vibe to it. The zentangles frame the large colorful photo and fill up the rest of the page. Even some colorful zentangled embellishments were added on top of the photo. Notice how they form a design triangle with the letters of the title “Minnie”. Filling the page with zentangles is a great way to scrapbook on a budget. After all, all you need is a black marker!

The zentangles on this page represent the zentangles of the tattoo! What a great idea! I love how there is a direct correlation between the shapes of the tattoo and the shapes of the zentangles on the page. The white stars are clearly recognizable as are the black circle arrows. Those stars also function as small havens of white space on the page. Notice how the addition of red to the photo frames and some of the zengtangles helps to pull the page together.

This zentangled scrapbook layout has been kept completely black and white. The shapes that surround the photo and that are filled in with different repeating patterns have a very organic vibe. The photo is very cute and the title is a good fit! I love how zentangling is a great way to both keep the need for elaborate scrapbooking supplies down ánd still produces a very vibrant and interesting looking page.

Another completely black and white zentangle scrapbook layout, designed by the same creator as the previous. It is stunning how two scrapbook pages with the same basic “ingredients” (black and white photo, big bold black title letters and zentangles) can look so different. The zentangles on this page are more exuberant with the striped snake-like line crawling all over the page. The zentangle patterns chosen are less dense and therefore produce a “lighter” looking page.

Go Vertical

Zentangles can go in any direction, so why not go vertical with them? Vertical stripes of any kind will help anchor the rest of the page elements to the layout. Let’s take a look how some very different kinds of zentangled stripes do just that!

“Just Do It”! Exactly! Get that black marker pen out of that drawer and add some awesome vertical zentangles to your page. I love the waviness of the lines and the very simple patterns chosen to fill the shapes. The rest of the page is kept simple with lots of white space! Notice how the journaling is written all around the page, pulling the zentangle vertical strip in with the rest of the layout.

If you’re looking for something more simple and less dominant, take a look at how zentangles are used on this scrapbook layout. The zentangles heart is adorable, what a great way to make your own very unique embellishments! The vertical zentangles are very simple and elegant. I love how the little hearts are used as a zentangle pattern. Do what you like and go for it!

The zentangles on this scrapbook layout are also vertically oriented, but give off a completely different vibe. They have been colored in, which is a great idea. They also don’t run across the page as a continuous vertical strip. This gives the layout a more playful look and also produces a design triangle between the three zentangled areas.

This layout uses digital zentangle paper as the background with an orange (gorgeous color!) overlay in the middle. Notice how both borders between the zentangle paper and the orange area is bordered by a very cute zentangle strip. Even the photo has an adorable zentangled photo frame! Using prefabricated zentangles, whether in paper or digital form, is a great time saver.

Play With Colored Zentangles Versus Black & White

Colors can have a great impact on a page. It is therefore very interesting to see what happens when either colored zentangles or black and white zentangles are used and how all those zentangles interact with the featured photo. Are you ready to play with color? Let’s get inspired!

A sunset photo has to be in color and so the zentangles around it have been kept in black and white. The page colors around that zentangle photo frame have been inspired by the colors of the sunset photo itself. This wonderful play with colors and black and white really draws your eye towards that gorgeous sunset!

This layout plays with colors in a totally different way. The monotone yellow-gold that has been added to the zentangles and to the photo frame complements these page elements beautifully. The zentangles themselves are gorgeous organic shapes with both dense and lighter repeating patterns. Notice the use of white space and how it gives the whole zentangle-photo cluster even more impact.

It is Middle Eastern and it is Christmassy! And the stars of the show are the beautifully adorned camels in the photo. I love how the round zentangled circles give a bedouin tent-like vibe. The tear-shaped zentangle elements hanging from the ceiling are a great way to fill the page and to pull the photo in with the zentangling

The use of zentangles on this page is very subtle: the cute photo of the kid has been framed in a premade digital zentangle frame. The colors of the photo resonate with the colors of the geometric grid of colorful squares, almost zentangle-like in their appearance! This layout shows that you zentangles really don’t have to be a big overpowering part of your page and that a little goes a long way!

Such a cute and goofy photo! The color photo is surrounded by both colored and black and white zentangles. The color scheme fits the photo colors. Notice the little green butterflies forming their own little cheeky design triangle! Some paint splatters were added, bringing even more whimsy to the layout. The page elements are grounded by the little zentangle “blob” resting on the bottom of the page.

Show Off Your Zentangles In A Gallery

Using zentangles on your scrapbook pages is all very well and good, but what if you don’t have that perfect photos or layout idea to match them? No worries: just zentangle away and display your beautiful creation in a gallery! This is such a cool idea! You become the artist you’ve always wanted to be!

The creator of this layout took the gallery idea and ran with it. Her zentangles are neatly displayed on her gallery wall, all framed in funky and grungy green picture frames. She journals about her zentangling around some of the frames. What a fun and creative layout!

This is a completely different gallery-type layout. The little zentangle squares are displayed in a grid taking up more than half the page. The title “Feeling Groovy” seems very apt! I love that the featured image has a cute little zentangles frame around it. The red frames around all the zentangle square and the photo give a pop of color.

Use A Colorful Frame To Accent Black & White Photos

Coloring in your zentangles when you use them on a scrapbook page can result in a layout that has way too much going on. A great way to avoid that mistake is to make either your zentangles or your photo black and white. This way they always match together. Let’s take a look at a great example of this principle.

how to use zentangles on your scrapbook page;zentangle scrapbook layouts; zentangle page inspiration; zentangling on layouts; zentangle pages; document memories using zentangles;
Layout designed by Kelly Klapstein.

This is a beautiful layout. The colors of the zentangle frame really pop with the background colors and the black and white photo is still the star of the show. I love that the zentangle frame is divided into four squares leaving a white border between the different pieces. The color scheme with greens and purples is just gorgeous. The effect of all the page elements combined is so refined! This layout is truly “One of a Kind”!

Use Stencils Or Zentangle Pattern Paper

In zentangling you fill up a shape with different repeating patterns. Why not use a stencil to create those shapes? This way you can create uniformity on the page and play around with different colors and patterns. Or go even one step further: use pre-made zentangle patterned paper! You can still add your own twist to it with colors etc. These techniques are perfect for those of us who love the zentangle look, but don’t have a lot of time or just don’t feel very creative.

In this layout, the zentangled background is made by stenciling different colors on the cardstock, outlining the different shapes and filling some of them in with zentangle patterns. The effect is truly stunning! What a wonderfully colorful layout! I love the fade out where the colorful shapes give over to white space.  Notice the journaling around the edge of the page, pulling the layout together.

This layout uses premade and pre-colored zentangle patterned paper. The colored background is combined with a black and white photo. The playfulness of the zentangle paper echoes the joy that radiates from the photo. No wonder the title of the page is “Birthday Joy”! Notice the black and white zentangle paper strip border running horizontally on the bottom of the page.

Use Subtle Zentangling

When you decide to use zentangling in your layout, it doesn’t always have to be a dominant page element. Zentangles can also be used in a far less dramatic way, as the following examples will show. Just a little touch of zentangling here and there, a photo frame or a small zentangled embellishment: the possibilities are endless!

Layout designed by Kzookeeper

You have to look quite closely to spot the zengtangling used in this layout. The photo and images used are very colorful and draw the eye and the zentangling is quite subtle! It is used to create photo frames for several of the color blocks. What a great way to add even more playfulness to an already fun and funky page!

Layout designed by CelineH

Another Disney-inspired layout documenting an eventful time at the Disney park for these “little mice”. The photo is kept in black and white, quite an unusual choice for a Disney-themed photo! The color pop comes from splattered pink paint on the background behind the photo and the yellow circle embellishments. The zentangling on the right side of the page balances the layout nicely and, although clearly visible, is not a dominant factor on the page. It fits in with the hand-lettered title and handwritten journaling.

The zentangling on this page can be found in the frame around the photo. This time it is the black and white that provides the bright pop on the layout. The rest of the page is a beautifully colorful unity. The black and white zentangled photo frame lifts the layout and prevents it from being too stuffy for its young subject. This layout shows that you can combine zentangles even with a very classic looking scrapbook layout.

Zentangle In A Cutout Shape

You usually zentangle in a shape of some sort. The shape doesn’t have to resemble something, it can be geometrical or have a more organic vibe. But what if you wanted to use the zentangles to support the chosen theme for you scrapbook page? Well, then you choose to zentangle in a shape that fits that theme! It is a versatile and fun technique to liven up any kind of layout!

What a fun layout! The ice cream cone shape is filled with zentangle patterns and thereby becomes a prominent element on the page. Notice the zentangles around the photo (so cute!) and around the whole layout, this latter pulling all the page elements together. I love the idea of creating this larger than life shape and fill it with zentangles to support your theme. Especially if the theme has to do with delicious ice cream!

The shape that was chosen to zentangle in on this layout is a wonky rectangle. This seems a bit boring until you realize how perfectly it balances out the rectangle of the photo itself up to and including the wonkiness! In this zentangle masterpiece lettering and words were added, which is quite unusual. The words were colored to stand out a little better. Big doodles were added on the diagonal to the background. Also notice the doodling in the two corners of the page (getting bigger and smaller) and the little stripes around the two rectangles. These are the perfect finishing touches!

Let’s zentangle in a heart shape! And let’s use white on black instead of the other way around. What a great effect! This heart element has gravitas and pulls the whole layout together. I love the combination of the black and white heart with the colorful striped (and almost zentangle-like background)!

In this layout the numbers of the year “2014” are filled with zentangles. And to continue the zentangle theme, flower type zentangles were added in the upper right corner. This creates balance and harmony. The page is laid out as a simple grid, but the zentangles add a bit of whimsical playfulness!

This layout shows another number filled with zentangles, but also several other shapes that have been given the zentangle treatment. I love how the number “2” and the flowers are not only filled with delicate patterns, but are also colored. Notice the design triangle of the three biggest zentangle elements on the page. And also notice all that delicious white space that make the whole page element cluster really pop!

Snap Away To Capture The Action

Animals move, cats too! And sometimes they move very fast. To capture all the wonderful running, jumping and meowing actions keep snapping away those photos! Have you tried the burst function on your camera yet? Why not get familiar with it and give it a go. Even if you don’t have a camera with burst function you can still catch that lovely action by shooting large amounts of photos. The great thing about digital is that you can keep the photos you want and get rid of the res at no extra cost! So snap away to capture all your cat’s actions!

Meet Dior, a truly adorable kitten! And this scrapbook layout has been made to specifically introduce her to the world. The featured photo is a very cute close-up of the star herself and the filmstrip at the bottom of the photo shows some extra photos of the little kitten in action. I love that a photo with her owner is included! Dior’s action photos show her exploring the yard, her little tail crooked at all angles. Those small “unfinished” cat tails are one of my favorite things about little kittens! The layout itself is kept fairly simple, it really is all about the photos and journaling. But just to make sure that this new family pet is loved, there is a cute heart stitched around the kitten’s sweet little face.

Another cute kitten! This sweet furry face is exploring the world around it. An adorable series of photos were snapped to document his or her cool adventures. Again, a very cute main photo was chosen and enlarged and a series of smaller photos show more of the adventurous action of this curious kitten. This layout is all about the photos (and the journaling!) and these photos are so cute, they really don’t need a lot of embellishing. The background color of the photos is a dominant and luscious pink, creating instant unity on the page. The creator of this page couldn’t help herself and gave her little kitten a small golden crown to wear on one of the photos. So cute!

This layout is all about a quite naughty Christmas kitten. Don’t be fooled by the unbelievably cute featured photo where the cat is slumbering in it’s little Christmas hat. The small photo strip on the bottom of the page shows an entirely different side to this cat! It is very busy exploring the Christmas tree, no doubt with fatal consequences for some of the decorations… I admire the patience of the photographer snapping away at the action instead of plucking this mischievous cat away from the tree. But doing so, a wonderful photo series has been captured about all the naughty exploits of this Christmas-loving cat! I love the way the creator of this layout has documented this with a tongue-in-cheek title! Notice the little Christmas hat on the “S” of “silent” and the little red dots on both the “i”s in the title. These little finishing touches are very much worth the effort!

This layout celebrates the cute bond between a boy and his cat. The photos are arranged in a film grid, showing some serious snuggling action! I love the set-up of the rest of the layout, with the giant blue heart and the somewhat grungy light-brown background. The photo strip is batted on white fabric (such a cool idea!) and the fabric itself is stitched onto the page. I love the playful vibe of this layout, those photos are precious! The journaling strips are right aligned and match the feeling of the page perfectly. The red paw print is the perfect finishing touch and mirrors that red frame around the photo in the center. The big blue heart is totally awesome!

This is a great idea! This layout shows all the busy activities this little cute kitten has to do on a day. It really is one busy cat! So, get out your camera and follow that cat of yours around for a bit. What does he/she actually do all day? You’d be amazed when you find out all the secret cat activities you might have missed! The layout itself is a simple grid, putting the focus on the photos and activities themselves. The photos are centered around the big flower embellishment and the color scheme of browns and greens beautifully matches the colors of the photos.

Stash Buster Use Those Small Colorful Patterned Paper Pieces

Like most scrapbookers I know, you probably have a big stash of teeny tiny scraps of patterned paper. I know I do! I just want to use every valuable piece of all my gorgeous papers, I love them so much! So for all of us who love to “hoard” those little scraps: don’t forget to use them every now and then! Let’s take a look at some amazing ideas for cat scrapbook pages that you can use to finish up that stash of small scrapbook paper pieces.

Meet Cheeky Luna the Cat. She is absolutely gorgeous! She just radiates sunshine wherever she goes! All the rays of the sun around this magnificent cat (or all the flower petals, if you will…) are made up out of different patterned paper pieces. Each paper makes up two parts, so for these 12 rays of sun you’ll need six different kinds of patterned paper. You could also choose to not repeat any of the patterns, but be mindful that the repetition is a great way to create some unity on the page. Notice that the journaling is written around some of the rays. This is a great idea! The journaling instantly becomes part of the design and doesn’t stand out too much.

This beautiful cat is called Queen Sheba and she loves naps and hugs. The grid is filled with hearts made of all sorts of different patterned paper. On this layout the unity is obtained by a very strong background color. I love the way the words separate the hearts instead of being put on a complete heart. This adds some extra playfulness and unpredictability to the page. You really can’t go wrong with putting lot of paper scrap hearts on your layouts!

Alternatively, you could use some of that washi tape you’ve always wanted to try! Notice how some of the patterns repeat themselves, but some don’t. So even if you just have one small strip of that perfect patterned paper, you can still use it! A cute piece of flower lace borders the paper strips on the right side. On the left side, the pieces all have different lengths, adding to the playfulness of the page. The featured photo is stacked on two identical photos, creating the movement of the photo breaking out of the surrounding heart frame. The little embellishments that are added on the left side of the heart are the perfect finishing touches.

Meet little Charlotte! This cute little cat deserves her own layout! In this layout the photo of Charlotte is stacked on top of a colorful grid of hexagons. This is a great way to destash your small scrapbook paper pieces! Notice how some of the patterns repeat three times, other two times and some not at all. The hexagon grid is build up in such a way that brings balance to the page. Two flower clusters frame the photo and three single flowers are added to different places on the layout. The finishing touch is the cute pink heart with green bow and the green letters spelling this lovely cat’s name!

This cat is enjoying some lovely sunshine and the creator of this page has decided to recreate that bright sun on the page. The sun rays are build up by different pieces of patterned paper stitched down with a small overlay. Red and turquoise enamel dot finish off this boho-chic looking sun. The dark background mirrors the dark colors of the cat’s photo and it makes the bright colors of the sun and other embellishment pop right off the page. The patterned paper strip that runs vertically on the left of the page beautifully balances out the big sun element and the added little buttons and the tag with the word “you” are just the perfect finishing touches.

Little Sherlock here is one cute little cat! His hexagon-shaped photo is stacked on top of even more hexagons. I really love those deep orange and green colors. Again, there is repetition in the patterned papers used to create an instant unified look. And what is it about a hexagon that makes it so interesting? The same layout using squares instead of hexagons would have been quite boring, even with all the bright colors. And using triangles could have resulted in an overly busy page. The hexagons seem to add playfulness to the page whilst still maintaining a pleasant sense of order. Notice the design triangle formed by the three colorful flower clusters.

Another fun thing to do with any scraps of paper that you have left is to cut them into big title letters. In this case, just the L, V and E, as the heart-shaped photo forms the letter O. This is such a fun and brightly colored layout! The little added dots or brads almost feel like confetti and the bright green colored piece of string looks like a streamer. The page looks like a happy parade for your cats! I love the whimsical look of the background paper with its “messy” lines. And the cats, of course, look very cute in the photo. It is a very sweet layout!

Tell A Bit More About Your Cat

Every cat has their own personality and what better way to document this than by writing about it on a beautiful scrapbook page! Write about all the little quirks, strange habits and cute behavior your cat exhibits and you’ll fill up a layout in no time! Let’s get inspired by looking at some examples of journaling-about-your-cat-based layouts to get your creative juices flowing!

This is a great example of journaling about your cat. Cats do sleep a lot, so why not talk about it a little bit? Unfortunately, the resolution of this image is too low to read the small journaling, but you get the gist from the title “the importance of good beauty sleep”, and, of course, from the featured photo. It is a very nice shot of the sleeping cat in question, no wonder the creator of this page felt so inspired to wax on about him or her! The layout itself is very simple: photo, title and journaling. Sometimes, there really is no need to make things any more complicated than that!

If you know that “Right said Fred” song, you may recognize some of the song lyrics in the journaling. If you have a sexy black cat, this is a great way to tell the world about him or her! I love the choice of combining the black and white photos with the pink-purple background and white journaling. The cat is incredibly photogenic, no wonder the inspiration to use this particular song to journal about him or her! Again, the layout is kept simple, focusing solely on the photos and the journaling. The grungy floral overlay on the background add a little playfulness to the page.

Another story about another sleeping cat. Even in Scandinavia cats tend to snooze all day long! Too bad I can’t read the journaling, but the cute photo and gorgeous layout make up for it. The color scheme is kept simple, with yellow and grey. Putting the background paper strips on an angle immediately makes the page look less static. The big yellow title letters literally pop of the page and the grey of the background is repeated in the little stars at the beginning and end of the title. A great idea! The whole layout has a wonderfully minimalistic vibe, with lots of white space and a cuddly cat!

The Photo Is The Star

Some photos are so awesome that they don’t need any embellishing. If that is the case with the photo you want to scrap, consider making the photo the start of the page! Hold back on the extras, just let that baby shine! Here are some examples of how our fellow scrapbookers have made the photo the undisputed focus of the layout.

Meet Onyx, the gorgeous black cat. This lovely photo of the cat lying in the green grass doesn’t need much else. The creator of the page has added some awesome black embellishments. This extra emphasizes the cat’s color and makes that grass green color really pop. Notice the little green additions to the flower cluster that mirror the green of the photo. Despite the elegant embellishments, the photo of Onyx is the absolute star of the page!

This layout features a smaller photo, showing that even smaller sized images can rule the page. There is a lot of contrast in the photo, drawing immediate attention. The rest of the layout is kept very soft pastel. You keep looking back to the cat’s lovely little face and piercing dark eyes. I love the big pastel-tinted title letters and the little flowers that are arranged in a circle on the page are just adorable!

This layout featrues a gorgeous photo of a gorgeous cat. That black really pops of the page. The color scheme of the rest of the page, with the soft pinks and greys, make the photo look even more prominent. Notice the cheeky little hot pink heart paperclip drawing the eye in the upper right corner of the photo. This paperclip forms a design triangle with the three clustered pink flowers on the left and the “Hello Beautiful” tag on the right. The horizontal strips of grey and pink ground the layout and pull all the page elements together.

Meet Addison, the spoiled cat! Doesn’t she look glorious in this photo? Addison is the diva of this page and all the embellishments on the rest of the layout point towards her photo as the star! I love the choice of very different flowers being clustered together, the circle shape of the photo and the little plants in the background behind the photo. The page is divided into a darker color scheme on the lower half of the layout and a lighter color scheme on the upper half. This way, your eyes inevitable meet in the middle, right at the place of Addison’s sweet furry face!

Such a cute little kitten! The star-photo is emphasized by the layered circles around it, making the cat almost literally the center of the page. The cluster of flowers in the left lower corner of the page is quite abundant! It is like the gravity of all those flowers together pulls the photo and the circles towards it. Such a cool effect! I love the beads and stitching on one of the circles. It is the perfect finishing touch! Notice how adding the little dragonfly embellishment in the right lower corner of the page has actually given the kitten something to look at!

This layout has quite the bold color scheme. I love that almost neon green! The photo of the cute cat remains the focus of the page, a fact that is emphasized by adding a giant brown overlay heart to the image. Putting the strip with the photo and the dark brown paw print background on an angle creates immediate interest. And the journaling is precious!

Another angled photo. The little six-week-old kitten is the star of the show! The red color in the photo is matched in the layout. The photo is emphasized by the red photo frame. The red theme of the page continues in the awesome piece of lace, the scalloped edge of the journaling and the glitter heart in the title word “Love”. I love the soft colors and designs of the background paper and the little ribbon with the bow is the perfect finishing touch to this cute page.

The title of this layout is perfection: “The life of a spoiled cat”. And the cat on the photo is looking right at it! So cute! Belle is a black and white cat and she is a great photography model! I love the vertical cropping of the photo and the consequent vertical orientation of the layout. The black and white colors of the cat are more than compensated by the colorful embellishments and title. Such a fun and vibrant page. But all eyes are on beautiful Belle, the most spoiled cat in the world!

Snickle is a gorgeous, dark grey cat with a very intense stare. I included this layout to show that you can also choose multiple photos to be the star! I love all the different angles of the photos and they all do deserve to be the center of attention! The mute colors of the rest of the layout emphasize Snickle’s beautiful grey color and the green of the background paper matches his eyes! I love the addition of the little buttons and the matting of the paper strips. Simple and effective, they are the perfect finishing touches!

Use Those Cute Pattern Papers And Embellishments

Cats inspire designers to create such amazing patterned papers and embellishments! So jump at the chance to go overboard and use all of your favorite scrapbooking stuff on your cat pages! Cluster away and make your cat layouts shine!

No need to hold back on embellishments! Each and every one of them is gorgeous! I mean, how beautiful are those lace butterflies! And that rhinestone cat! So awesome! The three clusters form a design triangle. I love the way the page uses two kinds of background paper and how the creator of this page has decorated the edge between them. The burned look gives a bit of grunge to this otherwise very sweet layout, as does the wooden plank background. What a fun combination of styles!

Every now and then a scrapbook page pops up that is so perfect it actually takes your breath away. And here is one of them! It is stunning. I love the colors. I love the way the little cat pops up from the abundant cluster of cartoon flowers. I love that the cat has been cut out of the photo, giving this effect of living in a cartoon flower world. I love its attention on the little butterfly and I absolutely adore the word art of the title. This is a very groovy layout!

This layout is cute in a completely different way. Shadow is a sweet cat, but the photo on this page is not spectacular. All the more reason to get creative with the rest of the page and use those cute cat embellishments! I love the way the cute cat squares are put in a grid with the emphasis on the left side of the page. The little cat with the fish under the journaling is so cute! I love the way the title looks with the shiny gold letters and the negative of the “d”!

Some more adorable cat-themed scrapbooking supplies were used on this layout. I love the two background papers with all the different cats and with the fish bones. The added embellishments fit perfectly with the patterned papers and I love that little pink square saying “cattitude”, how cute is that! But my absolute favorite element on this page (apart, of course, from the adorable photo!) is the cat with the Bahama flower shirt!

Mister Personality’s photo is put on the page amidst some square embellishments that form a grid. I love those muted colors. I also love that each grid square has been carefully designed to stand out on its own. The layered flower with the paw print heart is adorable, as is the blue cat embellishment in the right upper corner. The horizontal strip running under the photo pulls the layout together. I love the way the title looks, such a playful look!

Sometimes you just want to say how much you love your cat without using too many words. That is where these adorable speech bubbles come in! I love how each of them is filled with a different patterned paper background. Notice how the colors repeat, but the actual patterns do not! The photo of the cat is indeed “absolutely darling”, just as the little tag says! The whole layout has a light and airy feel to it, despite the many elements that were added to it!

This last layout is just absolutely adorable. The photo is cuteness personified and the color scheme fit that cute theme perfectly. I love that the page elements are all gathered in a center square, leaving lots of delicious white space on the rest of the page. The long stacked triangles are filled with repeating patterned papers in gorgeous colors, matching both the cute letters of the title and the little flower cluster in the lower right corner. I love how the little cat seems to peek right through the space left by the title and the flower cluster. The stripey border around the entire layout is the perfect finishing touch.
