Go Dark And Gothic

Yes, you can go cute and adorable when scrapping your Halloween page, but a true fan of the season will prefer the dark and gothic look. Whether classic Bram Stoker or doused in blood and gore: there’s a look for every Halloween fan! Let’s take a look at some of the dark, gothic and gruesome looks that some of our fellow scrapbookers have come up with.

This first layout is the perfect example of a classic (and classy!) gothic look. I absolutely adore this look. The photo is fantastic and completely dominates the page. Every embellishment (don’t you just love that black lace?) fits the theme and the color scheme perfectly. This kind of design would also be great for steampunk fans. I love the fact that the woman has a bird in her hand and two ravens with scary orange eyes have been added as embellishments. This layout just has it all: texture, great clustering, color pops and a feature photo that totally deserves pride of place.

This layout is completely different, but still quite dark. The photo subjects are zombies and the grungy type background fits this theme perfectly. This page is a great example that you can achieve a wonderfully scary effect even in a simple layout. I love the faded and grunge background and dirt streaks. The curled up and torn “Happy Halloween” tickets are the perfect finishing touch. The stamped vintage photo corners pull the whole layout together. The color pop on this page comes from the zombie blood: it doesn’t get more Halloween than that!

I love the blood red color scheme of this layout. The makeup and costume documented in the featured photo are amazing! Now that is a proper zombie! The creator of this page took the red of the zombie blood and ran with it. She chose a gorgeous dark red grunge background, but the fantastic flower cluster absolutely steals the show! This flower cluster, together with the white color pop of the photo, dominates this layout. Notice the eye as the heart of one of the red flowers. Finishing touches are the little banners tucked under the flower cluster in the middle and the grungy lace paper doily sticking out from behind the photo.

This zombie girl not only looks amazing in her Halloween costume, she also created an amazing Halloween layout. She really didn’t spare the bloody paint streaks and red pops of color. I love the layering of the cut-out doily style frames behind the photo. And I absolutely adore the bandages includes in on the page! What a great idea! The white “Zombie Girl” title, together with the white strips of journaling and the whitish look of the photo create a design triangle. From her journaling, you can absolutely tell how much she loved her costume. This shows in her Halloween scrapbook layout!

A kind of dark layout, but completely different from the layouts already featured in this blog post. The “darkness” predominantly comes from the photos themselves. The photos of the  little zombie kid are printed in black and white, with quite heavy retouching of the light and dark contrast. What a great effect that has! It instantly creates a very Halloween type dark look, which enabled the creator of this page to keep the rest of the layout a little bit “lighter”. This fits with the photo subject being a child. The dark vibes of the photos are nicely offset by the cute ghosts that are stitched onto the page. The perfect finishing touch is the cut-out spider web doily!

“Beware of the Zombies”! And this zombie is particularly fierce looking specimen! This almost monochrome layout fits perfectly in the “darker” Halloween layouts. It’s light background is grungy and the demon embellishment emphasizes the dark look. I love that the embellishments, the gate, the spider webs and of course the little bats, are all in black. They are clustered beautifully on the page, leaving lots of “white” space to rest the eyes. The 3-dimensional effect of the vampire bat wings is the perfect finishing touch.

Grid Up Those Photos!

Even when documenting a scary holiday as Halloween you can always depend on photo grids to create beautiful layouts that contain lots of photos. Here are just a few examples of different kinds of grids being used by other scrapbookers. Got a lot of photos to document? You can never go wrong with a photo grid!

This first photo grid layout is a great example of how a grid can be used to tell a visual story. In this case, some serious pumpkin gut scooping and pumpkin carving action are being documented. The grid almost functions as a graphic novel: you can follow the different steps in of the activities right along! It is not a problem if you can’t fill up your chosen grid size completely: just fill the left-over spaces with cute Halloween embellishments! The photos are kept small and are on a grid in the center of the page. Along the upper and lower border of the grid, the page is embellished with all sorts of fun Halloweeny paper strips etc.

This second layout is a very straightforward photo grid. Every lovely (and scary!) Halloween outfit has a spot of its own on this page. What a great way to document all the different Halloween costumes of one person through the years! You can just see the girl grow up through her Halloween photos! The rest of the page is decorated with cute Halloween drawn embellishments. Keep your photo grid page simple and let the photos tell the story!

Wow. Now this is a photo grid! You just keep on looking on this page, trying to take in the many MANY photos included! I love the way some of the grid is filled with orange pattern paper to create a “pixel” pumpkin. This pumpkin provides some much needed “white” space to rest your eyes a bit. This photo grid is a fantastic way to get a very serious amount of photos on one page. You can use a page like this in your album as the title page introducing more Halloween pages. Or you could print this layout in a large size and create your own Halloween wall art. Every time a person walks by they’ll discover something new! The black “Halloween” title with the cute little black cat on it is just the perfect finishing touch!

Halloween Pages Project Life Edition

Not every scrapbooker still makes traditional scrapbook pages. A lot of us are avid pocket page scrappers (Project Life anyone?), and some do a little bit (or a lot…) of both. So I wanted to include some examples of what a Halloween spread could look like in the pocket page style. So let’s take a look at what some Project Lifers have come up with!

This first layout is a pocket page using non-traditional Halloween colors. The red of the little boy’s outfit and of the Kit Kat candy is the main color on this page. This is emphasized by the use of red heart embellishments. Fortunately, the cute green little spider with its dangerous fangs hovering over the “Happy Haunting” title makes it absolutely clear that this is a Halloween page!

This “Spooktacular” pocket page layout is quite different. The page is very photo-heavy and is filled with colorful photos of cute kids in their Halloween costumes. There’s even a skeleton crawling from its grave! The big title pocket sports the traditional Halloween colors. The whole layout breaths a cheerful and happy Halloween vibe.

Make A Simple Layout Using Handmade Embellishments

You really don’t need to buy all sorts of expensive Halloween patterned papers and embellishments. True, they are often too cute to resist and there is so much choice! But if you are trying to scrapbook on a budget you might spare your wallet a bit of pain by creating your own handmade Halloween embellishments. Just keep it simple, colorful and cute. Use Halloween packaging or create them from scratch. You’ll make that Halloween page completely your own!

I love the simplicity of this layout with it’s vibrant colors and cute featured photo. You could easily make a similar pumpkin embellishment by cutting out your favorite orange scrapbook paper and glueing pumpkin segment shaped pieces on some black cardstock. The little ghost is not difficult to make either: cut out a ghost shape and draw the face and outline on it with a gold marker pen. When scrapbooking on a budget simple is always the best way to go! I love the handwritten journaling on the spider web card!

This layout shows how simple a Halloween page can be. Just add some scary costume photos to a black background and embellish with handmade items. The ghost and skull can be cut from ordinary white printer paper or, if you prefer something a little more sturdy, some white cardstock. I love the simplicity of these handcut shapes. They are very effective! The title is handwritten on a white piece of paper in a fun font and with the awesome detail of the skull in place of the “o” in “Halloween”. Such a cute detail! The little skull photo corners and little bat are fun additions too.

This layout, again, features some handmade embellishments, but this time the page has a completely different look. This is mainly due to the choice of background paper: so cool to chose those vibrant yellows and oranges! The big title letters are handdrawn and cut out separately – love the reference to those horror movies! The little ghosties were also cut out from some white paper and attached to a piece of string and a brad, so cute! You can make those flowers by adding different faux flower petals together and color them orange. The journaling was computer-written, printed out and matted with some black card stock. This way the writing doesn’t take up a lot of space and you can still add a lot of information. And the absolute stars of the show are the cute photos! The little girl is quite convincingly scary! Great page!

Photo Banner Collages Of Multiple Photos

If you have a lot of photos that fit together in some way, why not try to cluster them together in a photo banner collage? This is a type of grid that is very versatile and that can be used in a very playful way. The great thing about clustering your photos in a banner (whether horizontally or vertically oriented) is that you create a lot of white space on your page that can make your photos really pop. Let’s take a look at some examples!

In this first layout, all the photos together tell one story. The colors and styles of the photos are similar. All these aspects make them great candidates for clustering them together in some way. The creator of the page has chosen to cluster the photos in a horizontal way, using different photo sizes and frames, and arranging them in an almost symmetrical way. The orange of the pumpkin is mirrored in the color of the embellishments and paint smears. The painted black dotted grid behind the photo cluster pulls the cluster together and gives the page some depth. I love the little cluster of pumpkins (and cat!) on the bottom left side of the page!

For this Disney Halloween layout, the photos are arranged in a horizontal, slightly angled, orientation. Again, the photos fit beautifully together as they are probably taken only seconds apart and feature the same subjects in each photo. You can see why it would have been difficult to choose only one feature photo since each individual photo tells a different part of the story. The festive color scheme of the photos (I mean, how adorable is that purple-pink outfit of Minnie Mouse?) is continued on the rest of the page. I love the vibrant orange and purple! The scalloped edge of the papers backing the photos is a fun choice and as per usual I’m a succor for those polka dots! The title cluster is adorable and I love that a lot of journaling was added without being too obtrusive on the page.

This layout shows a very simple banner grid. Three cute photos are lined up horizontally, each at a slightly different angle. I love the polaroid style of the photos, leaving room to add those adorable pumpkin and “Trick Or Treat” embellishments. Most of the other page embellishments are clustered in a vertical orientation on the right-hand side of the page. The title in the upper left corner and the sweet little bat with its polka-dotted wings in the lower left corner balance the page beautifully. I love the “Halloween” title being spelled out with rhinestone letters, so cute! And the heavy black frames around the date and the spider web tags mirror the big black letters of the word “pumpkin” in the title.

The last photo banner layout is completely different. The creator of this page chose a minimalistic approach, with beautiful results! The photo banner is a straight rectangle comprised of many different sized photos. This way you can incorporate both horizontally and vertically oriented photos and even square ones in the same grid banner. The color scheme of the page is light and bright. This matches the photos beautifully. It makes for a very happy looking scrapbook layout. I love the light blue color pop of the frame around the word “fall” in the lower left corner and the square corner near the journaling in the upper right corner. This blue is mirrored in the strip of multicolored pattern paper below the photo banner and in some of the photos themselves. The embroidered leaf next to the journaling and the three brightly colored buttons next to the title “Snapshots” are the perfect finishing touches.
